A(H1N1) 2009 influenza virus from humans to birds

On 21st August Chile, South America, reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE)(1) the first infection with the pandemic A(H1N1) 2009 influenza virus in birds. The pandemic virus was detected in turkeys in two farms near the seaport of Valparaiso. The detection followed a decrease in both the laying rate and the egg shell quality in the flocks without noticeable mortality. Some birds had been in contact with persons with respiratory disease. On 29th August Chile’s health ministry confirmed that the strain of H1N1 2009 influenza pandemic found in these farms was the same as that currently circulating in humans in the Southern hemisphere.

As of end of August 2009 there has been extensive human to human transmission of pandemic A(H1N1) 2009 influenza in Chile which makes transmission from man to bird the most likely scenario.
